SANT KABIR NAGAR - At least eight people, including five policemen, were injured here Monday night after a mob indulged in arson and vandalism to protest the death of a youth who was hit by a car and dragged for over 10 km, officials said.
Buddhi Sagar, 20, got trapped in the rear portion of an Indica car in Ghangata area. However, the driver did not stop the car and continued to drag Sagar for over 10 kilometres, until the vehicle was intercepted by a mob in Tihua Bazar, some 300 km from Lucknow.
Angry at the incident, the mob set the Indica car afire and even tried to set the driver and his brother ablaze. When prevented by the police, the mob resorted to heavy stone pelting and even torched a police jeep,” Superintendent of Police Vijay Kumar told IANS on telephone.
To disperse the protesters, police opened fire in the air and managed to take the driver and his brother in their custody,” he added.
The situation was controlled only after reinforcements from various police stations arrived at the spot.
The situation is under control, but is still tense. Heavy security arrangements have been made in the area. Senior police and district administration official are camping in the area,” said a police official.
