LAKHIMPUR KHERI - A 15-year-old girl, whom a youth set ablaze in this Uttar Pradesh district for resisting his advances, died Friday, police said. The accused, who was on the run, has now been arrested.
The girl, a resident of Chandrapura village, was Feb 14 attacked in her home by Angad, 20, also a native of the same village.
“The girl had sustained over 60 percent burns and died while being treated at a hospital situated in adjoining Sitapur district,” Superintendent of Police D.K. Rai told reporters in Lakhimpur Kheri, some 200 km from Lucknow.
“We today (Friday) also managed to nab the accused youth who was absconding after attacking the girl,” he added.
Though the incident took place Monday, police officials claimed they came to know about it only Thursday after the victim’s father approached them.
“According to the girl’s father, Angad tried to molest his daughter while she was alone at home, and later escaped after setting her ablaze,” police inspector Mahendra Pratap told reporters in Lakhimpur.
