Lawyer attacked outside Chandigarh court premises

CHANDIGARH - Four unidentified men attacked a lawyer with iron rods and sharp-edged weapons outside the premises of a district court complex in Sector 17 here Tuesday and also damaged his car, police said.

The attackers fled in their car after injuring the lawyer, identified as Narinder Singh Gujjar. He was taken to a government hospital in Sector 16, from where he was referred to the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER).

According to the police, the four men attacked Gujjar in broad daylight in the parking area of the court, barely 100 metres from Sector 17 police station.

Agitated over the attack and police inaction, scores of lawyers gathered near the roundabout of Sector 16 and tried to block traffic. But they called off their protest after police assured them of action.

“The accused had some past animosity with Gujjar. We would arrest them very soon,” Chandigarh’s Senior Superintendent of Police Naunihal Singh told reporters.

Police sources said the attackers were students of the Panjab University here and one youth has been detained for questioning.
