JHANSI - A class 9 student died here Friday after allegedly being forced to finish a race organised by his school administration in a sports meet, an official said.

Saddam, a student of Veerangana Jhalkaribai Inter College, fell unconscious after completing two laps of the race. He died while being rushed to hospital.

The victim’s family alleged that even as Saddam complained of uneasiness during the race, he was directed by the school administration to continue the competition that was organised at the Christian College here.

Saddam’s family also claimed that the school authorities did not take any initiative to get him treated after he fainted.

“Even after he fell to the ground, the school teachers continued with the programmes organised for the event. The delay in getting him admitted to a hospital claimed his life. Action must be taken against the school administration,” Saddam’s sister told reporters in Jhansi, some 300 km from Lucknow.

When contacted, District Inspector of Schools (DIOS) M.L. Verma told IANS: “I have come to know about the incident. An enquiry is underway. Necessary action would be taken against the school officials on the basis of the enquiry.”

The school principal and others involved in organising the sports meet were untraceable.
