NEW DELHI - What appeared to be a routine arrest in a car-jacking case quickly turned out to be an important breakthrough for Delhi Police as they realised the apprehended man was the fifth accused in the Nov 30, 2010, gang rape of a 22-year-old woman in Seemapuri area of Delhi.

Rohit, 30, was arrested from Indirapuram in Ghaziabad Tuesday, Additional Commissioner of Police (South-East) Virender Singh Chahal said here Wednesday.

An executive in a Noida firm, Vikram Singh lodged a complaint that his Wagon-R car was overtaken by another vehicle Jan 28 around 10 p.m. near Hotel Crowne Plaza on Maa Anandmayi Marg area of south Delhi.

Four men then forced him out at gunpoint and fled with his car.

Chahal said the police zeroed in on Rohit, who confessed to his involvement in both the car-jacking and, surprisingly, the Seemapuri gang rape cases.

The woman was kidnapped by five men when she was returning home from the local market, and was gang raped in an isolated area nearby.

Her four attackers were arrested in December last year, and the police were on the lookout for the fifth.

Chahal added the remaining three men in the car-jacking case were still absconding.
