LUCKNOW - Accusing Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati of shielding tainted ministers, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Monday demanded a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry against a minister accused of murdering a junior engineer.

The demand for CBI inquiry comes after a woman, Sunita, protested before Mayawati, alleging involvement of Minister of State for Irrigation (Mechanical) Jaiveer Singh in the killing of her junior engineer father.

Demanding action against the minister, Sunita even blocked the way of Mayawati by lying down on the road while the chief minister was on an inspection in Aligarh Saturday.

“It’s surprising and shocking that instead of acting on the compliant of the victim, she was arrested on charges of creating obstacles in the execution of government duty,” senior BJP leader and party’s spokesperson in Uttar Pradesh H.N. Dixit told reporters here at a press-conference.

“It was all done at the behest of the state government, who is giving patronage to tainted ministers,” said Dixit.

“The charges against Jaiveer Singh are serious. It is evident that the state government will try every means to protect him (Singh). Even if the state government orders an inquiry against the minister, we all know that Jaiveer Singh would be given a clean chit. Considering all this we demand a CBI inquiry into the matter,” he added.

He said that the party was also gearing up to launch a protest Feb 10 against the state government for failing to maintain law and order in the state.
