Boat capsizes in West Bengal, two missing

KOLKATA - Two people were reported missing Wednesday when a boat ferrying over 50 passengers capsized in river Hooghly in West Bengals North 24 Parganas district, police said.

The Dakshineshwar-bound boat, after leaving from Belur in Howrah district, capsized in the Hooghly river near Kutighat in Baranagar of North 24 Parganas district. The boat ferrying over 50 passengers, mainly pilgrims, capsized because of overloading, said North 4 Parganas Superintendent of Police Rahul Srivastav.

So far we are informed that two people - Piklu Saha, 13, and Manika Biswas, 25, - are reported to be missing. Others have been rescued by the police with the help of local people, Srivastav told IANS over phone.

A rescue team of Kolkata Police has been rushed to the spot. And we have made all arrangementS to carry out search operations during the night, the district police chief said.
