SYDNEY - Amid devastating floods, a baby was born in Australia’s Queensland state with help from family members, a media report said Wednesday.

The little boy was born in his home in the flood-ravaged Lockyer Valley, located to the west of state capital Brisbane, after his mother Kristie went into labour late Tuesday, the Australian news agency AAP reported.

Authorities flew the woman from her isolated property in Bright View to a hospital at Ipswich, a spokeswoman said.

Mother and child are doing well, the spokeswoman said.

Rescue workers could not get through to the woman with baby boy born at 4.54 p.m. with a shoelace used to tie his umbilical cord, the Herald Sun reported.

At least 12 people have been killed and over 3,500 forced to take shelter in evacuation centres across the state as floodwaters continue to rise.
