US congresswoman among injured in Arizona shooting attack

WASHINGTON - A shooting at a shopping centre in Tucson, in the US state of Arizona, left 12 injured Saturday, including a member of the US Congress, reported broadcaster CNN citing police sources.

The broadcaster also reported witness accounts that there had been deaths in the incident.

Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords was at a citizen’s outreach event at a grocery store when the shooting occurred. According to some reports, she had been shot in the head.

CNN reported that her injuries were fairly serious. Other victims were reportedly members of her staff.

Initial reports also said the shooter had been taken into custody. No motive was known for the attack.

Giffords, a native of Tucson, is a Democrat who has been in office since 2007.
