LUCKNOW - Five policemen, including a station house officer (SHO), in Uttar Pradesh were Friday suspended for the illegal detention of a retired Railway Protection Force (RPF) constable who died in their custody, an official said.
The incident took place in Jaunpur, about 200 km from here.
The family of the victim Maniram alleged that he died of police excesses Friday. Superintendent of Police S.K. Bhagat has ordered an inquiry into the custodial death.
Maniram, a resident of Jaunpur, was picked up by the police two days ago to ascertain the whereabouts of a relative, who is an accused in a murder case.
“Preliminary investigations indicate that it was a case of illegal detention. The five police personnel, including Shrikant Rai, SHO of Chandwak police station, and four others have been placed under suspension with immediate effect,” Bhagat told reporters in Jaunpur.
“An inquiry has been ordered against all the five policemen. The body of the retired RPF constable has been sent for post-mortem. Further action would be taken on the basis of the post-mortem report,” he added.
