LUCKNOW - The Uttar Pradesh government Tuesday slapped the stringent Gangsters Act on Independent legislator Raghuraj Pratap Singh, better known as Raja Bhaiya, and his cousin and Samajwadi Party legislator Akshay Pratap Singh.

Along with them, Raja Bhaiya’s aides Hari Om Srivastava and Nanhe Singh have also been charged under the act, which imposes stringent conditions for bail.

Once dreaded feudal lord of the erstwhile princely state of Kunda, Raja Bhaiya was earlier also put behind bars during Mayawati’s last regime, when she tightened the noose around him, his father and their supporters. Ever since her return to power in May 2007, he remained quite mellowed down and had ceased to indulge in any controversial activity so far.

He was arrested and sent to jail along with 12 others Dec 19 on a complaint made by some supporters of the ruling Bahujan Samaj party, accusing them of attempting to murder a candidate in the ongoing local bodies elections in the state.
