Indian nabbed in Nepal with firearm

KATHMANDU - Police arrested an Indian near the India-Nepal border Sunday for allegedly carrying a firearm.
Preliminary reports said Munna Lal Kurmi, a resident of Balarampur in India’s Uttar Pradesh state, was arrested from Bahadurganj in southern Nepal’s Kapilavastu district along the border.
Kurmi was said to be carrying a pistol. Further details of the arrest are awaited.
Border districts in both Nepal and India are plagued by cross-border gangs and armed groups who have been involved in growing numbers of kidnapping, armed robbery, extortion and even contract killing.
Kapilavastu remains one of the most volatile districts in southern Nepal.
In 2007, it was the site of severe violence triggered by the murder of a state-armed anti-Maoist vigilante leader Mohit Khan. The turmoil forced the government to postpone the constituent assembly election.
