Meghalaya Police up vigil to prevent information leakage

SHILLONG - Alarmed over police officials joining rebel groups, Meghalaya Police have stepped up internal vigilance to prevent leakage of information to rebel groups, police said Wednesday.

The step was taken after deputy superintendent of police Champion R. Sangma and constable Roster Sangma joined the Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA), one of the five Garo rebel groups demanding a sovereign Garoland in western Meghalaya.

There are reports indicating that Champion is wooing some of the Garo lower-ranking police personnel to sympathise with his group on ethnic emotions, a top intelligence official told IANS.

Additional Director General of Police (special branch) S.K. Jain indicated that “some black sheep within the police may be passing on information, which is a risk”.

Jain, however, said: We have stepped up our internal vigilance and official level monitoring is put in place to tackle any eventuality.”
