CHITRAKOOT - At least eight policemen were injured when a mob here fought pitched battles with police after a student was knocked down and seriously injured by a car of a minister’s fleet in this Uttar Pradesh district, an official said.

Sanjay Kumar, a class 9 student, was Friday hit by a car that belonged to the convoy of Rural Development Minister Daddu Prasad, in Bahilpurwa town, some 300 km from Lucknow.

Locals turned violent after neither the minister nor any one in his fleet stopped to help Sanjay, who was writhing in pain at that time. He has been taken to Allahabad city for treatment.

“People gathered in a large number and vented their ire by targeting public property and vehicles. The mob also attacked us when we tried to disperse them,” Additional Superintendent of Police Bipin Mishra told IANS.

“Heavy security arrangements have been made in the wake of the violent protests by the locals,” he added.

Police are yet to register any case in this regard.

“An enquiry is underway. Necessary action would be taken on the completion of the enquiry,” said Mishra.
