Port-of-SPAIN - Two Iranians have been sentenced to a year’s imprisonment by a court in Trinidad and Tobago for staying in the country on forged passports.

Shima Amirian, 23, and 43-year-old Daryoush Masoud were sentenced by Magistrate Joan Gill of the Arima Police Court.

The duo was arrested at the Piarco International Airport in December 2010 while enroute to London.

Amirian pleaded guilty to charges of possessing a forged Danish passport, while Masoud peaded guilty to carrying an Italian passport.

Amirian, through an interpreter, told the magistrate that she was sorry for her actions and that she did not want to go to jail.

Magistrate Gill, however, said the offence was a serious one and deserved “a custodial sentence”.

“I am going to be very lenient with you, but you have to understand that you have to pay the consequences for your actions,” Gill added.
