MIRZAPUR - Five men were arrested in this Maoist-affected Uttar Pradesh district with a cache of explosives, police said Monday.

Over 5,000 gelatine sticks and several detonators were seized from the five men, who were arrested late Sunday from a hideout in Kanchanpur village.

“We cannot rule of the possibility of their involvement with Naxalites (Maoists). Investigations are being carried out in this regard,” a police official said in Mirzapur, some 350 km from Lucknow.

“Even as the five are giving contradictory statements about the place where from they brought the consignment of explosives, preliminary investigations indicate the explosives were brought from Maharashtra,” he added.

According to police, all those arrested are residents of Uttar Pradesh. “While four hail from Allahabad, one is from Mirzapur. The five are being jointly interrogated by the district police and the anti-Naxal wing of the state police,” said the official.
