AMRITSAR - The state’s Special Operations Cell (SOC) seized fake currency of face value nearly Rs.4.5 lakh here on the basis of a smuggler’s interrogation, police said Thursday.

According to police, working on a tip-off, they had arrested Sukhjit Singh, a smuggler, from here Jan 14 and had recovered counterfeit currency of Rs.3.5 lakh from his possession.

“On the basis of his interrogation, we raided a house yesterday (Wednesday) and recovered more fake currency of face value Rs.4.5 lakh,” a senior police official said.

“The notes were in the denomination of Rs.1,000. They were of very fine quality and it was very difficult to differentiate between fake and original notes,” he added.

“The consignment of notes was smuggled from Pakistan. Sukhjit has well-established links with Pakistan-based smugglers and we are interrogating him to unearth them,” he added.

Police were hopeful of making more recoveries and arrests in the coming days.
