Haiti needs continued support for quake recovery: Ban

NEW YORK - The international community must “renew and redouble” efforts to support Haiti one year after an earthquake inflicted one of the largest natural catastrophes in the world, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said late Tuesday.
Ban said in a message on the eve of the anniversary of the disaster, which struck Jan 12, 2010, that the UN will continue the work to help Haiti rebuild.
“The UN and international response was one of the largest of its kind ever mounted and continues to this day to help survivors of this tragedy,” Ban said. “These efforts must be redoubled and renewed.”
Ban expressed “solidarity with the people of Haiti and all those who suffered tragic losses a year ago” and recommitted the UN to continue to support Haiti in meeting the challenges of building a new society that is “safe, secure and prosperous” for its citizens.
The earthquake with 7 magnitude killed more than 230,000 people, including 102 UN personnel in Port-au-Prince. The dead included thousands of Haitian government workers and destroyed much of the capital and many government buildings.
