Political activist dies after arrest

THANE - A political activist, accused of assaulting a municipal corporator, died soon after his arrest Tuesday in this Maharashtra district, police said
“Napoleon Lopez, 50 complained of extreme chest pain soon after he was arrested. Instead of taking him to the police station, he was taken to the hospital, but he passed away,” Deputy Superintendent of Police Deepak Devraj told IANS.
Lopez, a leading activist of Bahujan Vikas Aghadi and president of Bhumiputra Shramik Sanghatana was arrested on charges of assault of Pravin Bhoir of the Vasai Virar Municipal Corporation (VVMC).
Bhoir was attacked by a mob while he was standing in front of his office in Fatherwadi. He was attacked with iron rods and wooden sticks. He had held named Lopez responsible for the attack.
Lopez had contested the newly formed VVMC’s first election but had lost to Bhoir.
