JUBA - A Southern Sudanese minister and his bodyguard were shot dead Wednesday morning in Juba, the capital of the autonomous region, an official said.

Co-operatives and Rural Development Minister Jimmy Lemi Milla was gunned down in his ministry by a man believed to be his brother-in-law, a spokesman for the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM), Morris Lukudu, told DPA.

Other reports put the blame for the shooting on Milla’s driver.

There was no immediate information on the motive for the killing, which took place in the capital of what will later this year become the world’s newest nation.

The murder comes just two days after official results showed Southern Sudan had overwhelmingly voted to secede from the north and end a long association characterised by two bloody civil wars.
