KOLKATA - A 63-year-old man and his wife were crushed by a speeding train at Belur station Thursday in West Bengal’s Howrah district. He was trying to help her after her foot got trapped in the track.

The incident occurred when Balasore residents Padmalochan Banerjee and Nandita Banerjee (61) were about to board a train after visiting their daughter’s house in Bally.

“Because of their old age they avoided the foot over-bridge at Belur to cross the railway track. While crossing the track, they noticed an approaching train and in hurry Nandita’s foot got trapped. Padmalochan rushed in to help and both were hit by the train,” said Superintendent of Railway Police (Howrah) Rabindranath Mukherjee.

Padmalochan died on the spot. Nandita succumbed to her injuries in hospital, said Mukherjee.

Train services were not disrupted.
