HANOI - At least two people were killed and 26 injured when a train hit several cars and motorbikes on a bridge in southern Vietnam, police said Monday.

The accident happened Sunday when a train travelling from Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi crashed into six cars stuck on Ghenh bridge in Dong Nai province.

The two fatalities were a 49-year-old man and his 20-year-old son, police said.

The bridge, built more than 100 years ago, is very narrow, but was designed to handle both train and car traffic.

The state-run newspaper Tuoi Tre quoted an officer in charge of the bridge’s railway gate as saying authorities had informed the train driver of the traffic jam but he didn’t slow down and later said he had not been told.
