RAIPUR - A town in Chhattisgarhs Bilaspur district observed a total shutdown Thursday to protest the killing of a constable, when he went to a village to apprehend some people accused of theft. A sub-inspector was also killed in the incident.

A four-member Railway Protection Force (RPF) team was attacked Wednesday when they tried to apprehend a few people accused of stealing high tension electric wire in Pali village.

All the four policemen sustained multiple injuries in the attack including constable C.P. Singh who died after an hour of the incident while Sub-Inspector S.P. Singh succumbed to injuries Thursday at a hospital in Bilaspur town.

The attack by the alleged thieves on the RPF team led to a widespread protest at Ratanpur town, some 140 km from Raipur, where the murdered constable hailed from.

The angry residents observed a total shutdown and took out a rally, demanding that the government rein in mafia in the state and immediately arrest the killers.

Meanwhile, police raided Pali village and some adjoining areas Thursday to track down the accused but failed to make any arrest.
