SATARA - Robbers broke into a cooperative bank in this Maharashtra district and fled with over three kg of gold ornaments, police said Monday.

The robbery took place at the District Credit Cooperative bank in Kaledhon village, 80 km from the district headquarters of Satara late Sunday.

“The robbery came into light only after the bank was opened this morning. Gold ornaments worth Rs.52,41,000 weighing 3.19 kgs were stolen after the robbers broke into the strong room of the bank and opened the safe with a gas cutter,” a police official told IANS.

The official said that no alarm was raised Sunday night. “The security alarm did go off, nor did the guards realise there has been a break in,” he said.

“We are investigating the matter further,” he added.

Satara is over 250 km from Mumbai.
