BANDA - Ravan Garg, the fourth accused in the Banda rape case, surrendered before a local court in this Uttar Pradesh district Tuesday, officials said. The prime accused, a ruling Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) legislator, and his two henchmen are already in custody.

Garg surrendered before Chief Judicial Magistrate Tripta Chaudhary, after which he was sent to judicial custody until Jan 31.

Garg, his two associates Surendra Neta and Rajendra - the three henchman of the legislator Purshottam Naresh Dwivedi, the main accused in the case, had raped the girl who belongs to OBC (Other Backward Classes).

On the basis of the CID enquiry that was ordered by Mayawati, police arrested Dwivedi Jan 13, while Neta and Rajendra were nabbed Jan 12 but Garg was absconding.

After raping the girl, Dwivedi got the girl arrested Dec 15 on theft charges.

Prompted by an Allahabad High Court directive, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati Saturday ordered the release of the rape victim.
