LUCKNOW - Two policemen were critically injured after a mob in Uttar Pradesh’s Mathura district attacked a search party on the trail of a suspected murderer, an official said Wednesday.

The residents of Nagla Akosh village, including women, assaulted the police late Tuesday while they carried out raids in the village to nab a man named Charto who was wanted in a murder case.

“The villagers attacked the police with wooden sticks, spades and even resorted to firing. No one received bullet injuries in the incident,” senior sub-inspector R.K.Tiwari told reporters Wednesday in Mathura, some 350 km from Lucknow.

“A police inspector and a constable received serious head injuries in the attack. Their condition is stated to be serious,” he said.

According to the official, while Charto is still at large, several locals have been detained for their alleged involvement in the attack on the police.

“Additional security was deployed in the village and the adjoining areas. The situation is completely under control now,” he added.
