LUCKNOW - A police sub inspector was killed and four of his colleagues seriously injured Wednesday when a mob torched their outpost in Uttar Pradesh to protest the arrest of a suspected robber.

Alleging that the arrested man was not linked to the Dec 9 robbery at a post office, the protestors went on a rampage in Jamaniya town in Ghazipur district, a police officer said.

The attackers are suspected to be activists of the Communist Party of India-Marxist Leninist (CPI-ML). After the violence, police arrested about 50 people.

The mob stoned and barged into the police outpost before setting it on fire.

The sub-inspector in charge of the outpost succumbed to injuries and four others suffered serious injuries, Assistant Director General of Police Brij Lal told reporters here.

“Additional forces from various police stations have been deployed in the area. The situation is tense but well under control,” Superintendent of Police Shaqeel Ahmad told reporters in Ghazipur, some 300 km from Lucknow.
