NEW DELHI - A tailor was arrested in south Delhi for attempting to extort Rs.67 lakh from his employer, police said Wednesday.

Mohd. Nasir was arrested Tuesday from Sangam Vihar, where he lived, after a complaint was filed by Rupali, a boutique owner and the wife of TV anchor Sandeep Singh.

According to Rupali, she got an anonymous phone call Dec 26 in which the caller threatened to kill her family if she did not pay Rs.67 lakh.

“From the conversation, it was apparent that the caller knew everything about her family and her son. The next day, Rupali received an SMS from a different number on her phone asking her to give Rs.67 lakh,” said H.G.S. Dhaliwal, deputy commissioner of police (South).

Nasir allegedly roped in a minor boy, who runs a mobile repair shop in Adchini area, for the extortion bid.

Nasir wanted the money for his daughter’s wedding, police said.
