34 killed in Uttar Pradesh accident

LUCKNOW - Thirty-three members of a funeral procession and a driver were killed when their mini-truck overturned and was hit by a bus in Uttar Pradesh’s Badaun district Saturday night. At least 12 people were also injured, police said.

“A DCM mini-truck, carrying members of a funeral procession, overturned on the sandy road in Unjhani town and was hit by the roadways bus coming from the opposite direction,” Senior Superintendent of Police D.K. Choudhary told IANS on phone from Badaun, some 250 km from Lucknow.

“33 members, all men, of the funeral procession and the driver of the bus have been killed. Of the 12 injured, majority were of the funeral procession,” he added.

The injured are being treated in different hospitals of Bareilly and Badaun districts, he said.

“Six of the injured have been referred to Bareilly as their condition deteriorated,” said Choudhary.

“The people riding the DCM were returning to their native places in Ujhani after performing the last rites of a man on the Kachla ghat in Badaun,” said Choudhary.
