KATHMANDU - A Pakistani national was arrested at Kathmandu’s Tribhuvan International Airport for trying to smuggle out falcons in his baggage, police said Tuesday.

The man, identified as Ghulam Abbas, reached the airport Monday night to catch a Qatar Airways’ flight to Doha, police said.

A search in the baggage area revealed that Abbas was carrying 10 falcons.

Falconry - hunting for game with falcons - is a popular sport in Qatar.

Nepal has 12 species of falcons, of which two are on the list of endangered species.
