GHAZIABAD - Investigators were busy Sunday examining the cellphone records of a Ghaziabad jeweller who was kidnapped and killed by three people a day earlier, police said.

Atul Goel, who ran five jewellery shops, was killed in Kavi Nagar area of this district town bordering Delhi.

“After his abduction, he received two phones - one from his son and another from Naveen Garg, a shopkeeper. In both phone calls, he revealed that he had been kidnapped. That might be the main reason of his murder,” said Superintendent of Police (City) A.K. Vijaita.

Three people forcibly stopped and entered the car driven by 42-year-old Goel Saturday, and at gunpoint directed him to drive on, Goel’s son Shubham said.

Police said Goel might have tried to resist his abductors, upon which he was shot dead. Goel’s body was found in the vehicle.

He sustained one bullet injury in his head, said doctor V.K. Tyagi of Yashoda Hospital where he was rushed after the incident.

Meanwhile, to protest Goel’s murder the local jewellery market remained closed and the traders’ organisation, Samyukta Vyapar Mandal, staged a sit-in at Chopla Mandir.
