LUCKNOW - Three bandits wanted in over a dozen criminal cases, including murder, were shot dead in a gunfight with police in a forested area of Uttar Pradesh’s Chitrakoot district early Thursday, police said.

Acting on a tip-off, a police team along with sleuths of the Special Operation Group (SOG) surrounded the bandits in the Puniapurwa forest and killed them, a police official said.

“We have identified two of the three bandits. One is Shiv Moorat, who had a reward of Rs.75,000 for his capture, while the other is Banti, who carried a reward of Rs.25,000 on his head,” police inspector Chandradhar Gaur told reporters in Chitrakoot, some 300 km from here.

“Both of them had over 12 criminal cases, including murder, abduction and other heinous crimes, pending against them at various police stations. Besides Uttar Pradesh, the two also used to operate in parts of Madhya Pradesh,” he added.

A sten gun, a police rifle and several rounds of live cartridges have been recovered from the trio.
