LUCKNOW - A doctor in Uttar Pradesh’s Kanpur district allegedly committed suicide as he feared his wife would falsely implicate him in a dowry case, police said Tuesday.

Siddharth Kumar, a doctor with a government hospital in Unnao district, was Tuesday found hanging from a ceiling fan in his house in Harsh Nagar area in Kanpur, some 80 km from Lucknow.

In the suicide note recovered by the police, the doctor blamed his wife Renu Kureel for prompting him to take the extreme step.

“In the note, the doctor has alleged that his wife regularly extorted money from him and even threatened to register a false case of dowry against him and his family members if the money was not provided as per her demands,” police inspector K.K. Kanaujia told reporters in Kanpur.

“On the basis of preliminary investigations, a case under Section 306 (abetment to suicide) of the IPC (Indian Penal Code) has been registered against Renu Kureel,” he said.

Kumar married Renu around three years ago. But Renu moved to her parents’ place in Kanpur’s Kidwai Nagar after a quarrel a year ago.
