PANAJI - A 24-year-old alleged kidnapper attempted to commit suicide by dramatically slitting his throat in a Goa court Wednesday, seconds after a trial court judge extended his judicial custody.

Sameer Sheikh was charged with kidnapping his nephew — a four-year-old boy from Mapusa town, around 15 km from here. He was subsequently arrested from Mumbai.

In his complaint, the grandfather of kidnapped child Salim Sheikh, a rag picker by profession had said that Sameer had asked him to pay a ransom of Rs.50,000 in exchange for his grandson’s life.

Samir was hospitalised and later discharged.
