NEW YORK - A bag containing eight small bricks of military C4 explosives was found in a cemetery in lower Manhattan, New York police said Monday.

Police Chief Ray Kelly said the bag was discovered by a volunteer street cleaner at Marble Cemetery on 2nd Street, between 1st and 2nd avenues. The black garbage bag was resting against a tree.

“There is writing on the explosives and it appears to be military,” Kelly said. He said there was no detonating device inside the bag and police was investigating the closed-off area.

Kelly showed a photograph of eight sticks of the bomb material, which he said are military-grade explosives. C4 is one of strongest explosives used by the military as well as terrorists because a small amount can cause devastating damage.
