NEW DELHI - A stretch of road caved in at Vikas Marg Friday morning, affecting traffic in east Delhi, police said.

According to the Delhi Police, a portion of the road between Nirman Vihar and Shastri Vihar caved in around 7 a.m.

“The road caved after an underground water pipeline in the area burst. The area has been cordoned of and civic authorities have been informed. None was injured,” a police officer told IANS.

Over two dozen incidents of road cave-ins have occurred in the city in the past one month.

Abundant rains, poor road engineering and maintenance by civic agencies and heavy vehicular traffic due to Commonwealth Games construction are making the capital’s roads crumble, creating huge craters in many places and peeling away bitumen from re-laid pathways.
