At least four killed, 52 injured in Madhya Pradesh collision (Third Lead)

BHOPAL - At least four people were killed and more than 50 injured early Monday when a goods train rammed into a stationary passenger train near Guna in Madhya Pradesh, railway officials said. Many passengers were still trapped in the mangled coaches of the Intercity Indore-Gwalior Express, reports added.

The accident took place around 5 a.m. at the Badarwas railway station, about 50 km from Guna, where the Intercity Indore-Gwalior Express was awaiting a signal. Three coaches are said to have been damaged.

Western Railway chief spokesperson Piyush Mathur said four to five people could have died in the incident.

“Fifty-two people were injured. Of them, 35 were given first aid… Of the other 17, nine were admitted to the Guna district hospital and eight to the Shukri hospital,” the chief public relations officer (CPRO) said.

A railway official in the national capital added that the casualty must be under 10 as the goods train was travelling very slowly.

“Accident relief trains have reached the accident spot from Kota and Jhansi. It will take five to six hours to clear the passengers,” Mathur said.

Union Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee has announced a compensation of Rs.5 lakh for each of kin of those killed in the accident.
