CHANDIGARH - The Haryana government Wednesday said no Jat agitators were crushed to death Monday under a goods train as reported by the media. He termed the reports as “false and baseless”.

“We strongly deny press reports that two people were crushed to death near Pirthala railway station by a goods train. Reports Tuesday said that a few agitators were trying to stop the train when this incident happened,” said a government spokesperson in a statement issued here.

“The news items were totally false and baseless. We urge the people of Haryana to not pay any heed towards such rumours and maintain peace and calm in the state,” he added.

Members of the Jat community in Haryana had gone on a rampage Monday and Tuesday demanding reservations in government jobs and educational institutions.

One youth, Sunil Lamba, was killed in police firing and several others were injured in clashes Monday. The Haryana government has announced Rs.10 lakh financial assistance to the family members of the deceased and a government job to one of his family members.

Following the violence, Hisar Superintendent of Police Subhash Yadav was booked and removed from his post late Monday.
