JAKARTA - At least eight teenagers were washed away by the surging waters of a river in Indonesia, a media report said Sunday.

The incident occurred in the Kinarum river in South Kalimantan province Friday afternoon when the victims went for a swim to celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr, Xinhua reported Sunday citing local news portal Detiknew.com.

The area where the accident occurred is a famous tourist spot with many rapids and whirlpools.

A local resident contacted the police rescue team. The bodies of the eight victims were found later and were taken home by their families.

Another 14 teenagers have been reported missing from the same site, officials said.
