Police: Car with bad brakes crashes with Ohio bus

KETTERING, Ohio — Police say a woman who couldn’t afford to fix her car’s brakes ran a red light and crashed into a school bus carrying elementary school children home in western Ohio.

Police Lt. Bill Karolyi (kuh-ROHL’-ee) says one child was hospitalized as a precaution following the Thursday afternoon crash in Kettering, a Dayton suburb with about 60,000 residents. He says the driver of the car had her adult son as a passenger and both also went to a hospital.

Police say the driver and her son said they knew the car had faulty brakes but the poor economy prevented them from getting repairs. They say the driver will be cited for running the light and investigators will look into further charges.

Eighteen children were on the bus. Parents and a second bus took them home.
