Ferry rescues 4 from plane that lands on Lake Erie

TOLEDO, Ohio — A ferry boat crew member in Ohio says he helped pull four people to safety after their plane landed on Lake Erie.

Jake Market says the only injury among the four appeared to be scratches on one woman’s leg.

The plane was approaching a small airfield Friday on South Bass Island, about midway between Toledo and Cleveland. Witnesses say it skipped across the water, coming to rest about 100 yards from a boat dock near the island. The plane’s nose dropped into the water and two men and two women got out.

Market says passengers on the boat threw life jackets to the four people who were on the plane. He says the landing reminds him of a US Airways flight that made an emergency water landing in New York’s Hudson River last year.
