HONG KONG - A 15-year-old boy, described as “polite” and “good student” and with no apparent mental illness, hacked his mother and sister to death, saying “the world will be better with fewer people”.

The boy, whose name was not given, slaughtered his 42-year-old mother and 12-year-old sister with a chopper. Their bodies were found in their apartment with multiple chop wounds, mainly to the neck and abdomen, Hong Kong’s Standard newspaper reported.

The boy was arrested from a nearby park after he telephoned police saying he had killed his family. He told police during interrogation: “The world will be better with fewer people”.

Police said they have not been able to find a motive and initial investigations suggest the teenager has no mental illness or drug abuse record and did not argue with anyone before the incident.

The boy was a top student in school and neighbours have described him as polite, they said.

“He often helped out at his parents’ restaurant, did not have any record of drug abuse, was known to be mentally stable, never skipped school and got along well with his schoolmates,” a neighbour said.

The vice principal of the boy’s school said: “The boy behaves well at school and has never seriously broken any rule. He gets along well with schoolmates and his academic results are fair.”

The boy’s father was at work in the family restaurant when his wife and daughter were killed. The restaurant is situated opposite to the building in which they live, police said.
