PARIS - International police agency Interpol said Friday that more than 5,000 people were arrested in Asia for illegal gambling in an operation run during the World Cup.

The Interpol-coordinated operation specifically targeted illegal football gambling “linked to organised crime gangs”, the agency said. Police seized more than $10 million dollars in the action.

Officers in China, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand participated in the crackdown, and raided “nearly 800 illegal gambling dens which handled more than $155 million worth of bets”, Interpol said.

Police also seized cars, bank cards, computers and mobile phones in the operation, which ran from June 11 to July 11.
