100 missing as boat capsizes in Bangladesh

DHAKA - Over 100 people were missing after a passenger boat, which was hit by a sand-laden barge, capsized in a river near this capital city.

According to police, the boat left the Tanbazar ghat for Bandar area at around 10 p.m. Sunday. As it reached the middle of Shitlakhya river, a sand-laden cargo boat rammed into it.

As no body was recovered by Monday morning, some of the kins of those missing attacked a sand-laden trawlers and beat up the workers, Star Online reported.

The relatives of the missing people have been waiting on the both sides of the river.

Officer-in-Charge of Narayanganj Sadar Model Police Sation Akhter Hossain said they had identified 10 missing people.

Fire Service and Civil Defence sources said the rescue operation is being disrupted due to heavy current in the river.
