State police: 5 dead in plane crash at NM airport

RUIDOSO, N.M. — Authorities say five people have died after a plane crash at the Ruidoso (REE’-uh-DOH’-soh) airport in the south-central new Mexico.

State Police Lt. Eric Garcia says it’s believed there were seven passengers aboard the airplane Thursday and authorities are working to get the survivors to medical care.

Garcia had no other details.

Lincoln County emergency manager Travis Atwell confirmed that two people were pulled from the wreckage and were being taken to an area hospital. He says it appears the plane overshot the runway at the airport about 130 miles south of Albuquerque but that it’s too early to tell what may have caused the accident.

Firefighters are working to extinguish a small forest fire that was sparked when the plane crashed.
