JAKARTA - The Indonesian authorities Wednesday issued a tsunami warning after an earthquake measuring 7.1 on the Richter scale struck the easternmost province of Papua, causing residents to flee their homes and workplaces in panic.

The quake occurred at 12.16 p.m., with its epicentre about 123 km south-east of Biak district at a depth of 10 km, the Meteorology and Geophysics Agency said.

There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties, but residents fled their homes and workplaces.

At least two aftershocks, measuring up to 6.6 on the Richter scale, followed the quake.

It was the latest in a series earthquakes to hit Indonesia in recent weeks.
