2nd bird recovering after being found in Gulf oil

FORT JACKSON, La. — A second bird has been found in the Gulf of Mexico oil slick and is recovering at a bird rescue center in Louisiana.

National Wildlife Federation president and CEO Larry Schweiger said Tuesday that a brown pelican was being cared for along with a northern gannet that was found several days ago. The brown pelican is Louisiana’s state bird.

Schweiger says there’s no way to know how many birds have been oiled because the slick is so big and offshore.

Schweiger says both were in an isolated recovery area to let them preen and get back to flying condition.

He says he doesn’t know just where or when the pelican was found.
