DHAKA - A court here Wednesday directed the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to submit by March 10 its probe report in last year’s Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) mutiny that left 74 people dead.

Metropolitan Magistrate Abdul Majid passed the order after Additional Superintendent of CID Abdul Kahar Akond failed to submit the inquiry report Wednesday, The Daily Star reported.

Over 2,000 BDR troopers have been arrested for the revolt that took place Feb 25-26 last year over low wages and poor working conditions.

On Jan 25, 53 troopers of the 19 Rifles Battalion in Feni pleaded guilty and begged for mercy for participating in the mutiny.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s government was barely a few weeks old when it faced its most serious challenge Feb 25-26 last year after troopers mutinied inside the BDR’s headquarters at Pilkhana in Dhaka.

The dead included 57 army officers who were on deputation to BDR.

BDR guards the country’s 4,300 km border with India and about 300 km with Myanmar.
