NEW DELHI - Two girl students committed suicide in two different incidents in the capital Friday, police officials said.

The suicides were reported from Bawana area in west Delhi and Sarita Vihar in south Delhi, an official said.

Gayatri (20), a first year student at Aditi College, allegedly committed suicide by jumping into the Yamuna canal in Bawana area Friday morning at around 11.15 a.m.

She lived with her parents at Daryapuri in Bawana, police said.

According to the official, Gayatri had left home for college as usual. But she headed for the canal instead. Seeing the girl jump into the canal, people rushed to rescue her and informed the police.

“The girl was rushed to Maharishi Valmiki Hospital where she died during treatment,” the police official said adding that her body was sent to Ambedkar Hospital for autopsy.

The official also said that no suicide note was found either from her body or from her home.

“According to the girl’s family members, everything was going on well with Gayatri and that they never expected her to do such a thing,” he said.

In the second incident, a 21-year-old girl allegedly took her own life by hanging herself in her room Friday afternoon, police said.

Shalini, a resident of Jasola Vihar at Sarita Vihar area in south Delhi, was a final year degree student.

“She was found hanging in her room by her mother. The family members informed the police and rushed her to Holy Family Hospital where she was declared brought dead,” said a senior police officer.
