Mob attacks cops after farmer’s death

JALGAON - Angry protesters took to streets, attacked police and called for a shut-down as a farmer died in this Maharashtra district soon after he was asked by an official to leave a school premises where exams were being conducted, police said here Tuesday.

Faijpur division’s sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) Dilip Shankarwar was on duty patrolling schools were state board exams were being held and saw a man standing inside the school premises in Yawal town, some 90 km from police headquarters at Jalgaon town, police said.

SDPO Shankarwar asked him to leave. The farmer had nothing to do at the school and hence was asked to leave, an official from the Yawal police station told IANS.

But as soon as he came out of the school premises, he suffered a fit and died, he added.

The official, however, refused to clarify whether the farmer was manhandled by Shankarwar, as people alleged.

Following the incident, angry people pelted stones at the police station. The farmer’s relatives also lodged a complaint.
